Leap of Faith

As an Animal Science major, I often get the feeling that all my classes seem to run together. All I learn about is science, science, and more science all day long. Now, don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love science and I love my major or else I wouldn’t be doing it. However, the material can get utterly dry and often difficult. This can become quite daunting when day in and day out its just the same old same old and I just feel like I need a change of pace. It is nice to be able to take some time to think about something else and refresh the mind and body. That is why last semester when I enrolled for my spring semester classes my advisor challenged me to go a little out of my comfort zone and do something I wouldn’t have normally ever considered.
I went to my advising session like usual, I already had most of my classes picked out and in my shopping cart. My advisor looked through the classes I had picked out and he said to me “Well you have a lot of pretty heavy classes listed here and I think that’s really great. From an advisor’s stand point I couldn’t be happier, but let me ask you, have you ever thought about adding in something a little different, something a little easier and fun? Something like dance?” Honestly, I had considered trying a class or two outside of my major in order to broaden my perspective and see what all was available to me, but never had I considered a preforming arts class.
At first, I was pretty against the idea and told him I would take a business class or psychology or something to add more credit hours to my semester. A couple days later I was revisiting my shopping cart and putting the finishing touches on my schedule, making sure everything fit correctly and my class arrangement was perfect. Something compelled me to look up the dance classes. It just so happened that the introductory level dance class fit perfectly into the schedule I had. If I took Dance, I wouldn’t have class on Fridays this was an added bonus. It seemed like it was meant to be, and I found myself adding the class to my cart and thinking “Why not? It can’t be that bad, and who knows? Maybe I will even enjoy it.”
Fast forward to spring semester and here I am taking a dance class and loving it! The class is fun and engaging and offers a different perspective into my daily life. Plus, dance is a great workout and it helps me to refresh and reboot after a long day of sitting in science lectures and labs. It offers me a stimulating change of pace that I otherwise would have missed out on if I hadn’t taken a chance and tried something new.
