An Open Letter to my Grandma

Thank you for shaping me into the woman I am today. I don’t know where or who I would be without you. From a young age, you taught me how to be strong, how to fight for what I want, and how to be a hard worker. You have taught be how to overcome obstacles and challenges. You have overcome many obstacles and challenges in your 84 years of life. As a young girl, your family home was destroyed by a fire leaving you and your family with nothing, but the clothes on your back. That made for a tough childhood that hard work, determination, and faith would see you through. You married shortly after high school and started life from the ground up, literally. You and grandpa built your house, built your family, helped to build the church, and built a family business. All of this came because of your determination and dedication. Then you faced another challenge, caring for your ill husband, who then passed at a young age. Your married life was cut short due to your husband, the love of your life, dying of cancer. Once again you persevered. You went on to finish raising your two children, watch them marry, and have children of their own. You now can watch your great-granddaughter grow. I know how happy this makes you. It makes me happy to see you happy. You continue to teach us all about family values. Thank you for all that you have done. I love you and I admire you!

In sisterhood,
