Essentials for the Journey Home over Holiday Breaks

Going to college ten hours from where I grew up can be challenging at times. The distance makes me miss my family, the farm and, of course, my dog. I wouldn’t trade my experiences and friends I’ve made at K-State for anything, but I am always excited to head east for holiday breaks. Five months without going home can be trying! Here are my road trips essentials.

1. A Good Playlist

Being a central Indiana girl in a Kansas world and an avid Smokey & the Bandit fan, you better believe that the song “East Bound and Down” by Jerry Reed plays every time I turn onto I-70 to head home. I have to get hype to see my family and doggo! I have a specified “Road Trip” playlist on my phone for the long drive to keep me awake and excited. Most of my playlist consists of 90’s and red dirt country. I just don’t think one can go wrong with George Strait, Shania Twain or Cody Johnson. When I near the end of my trip and turn onto 500 E, I play “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver. Cheesy, I know, but hey, it’s tradition!

2. Snacks

I always pack a cooler full of snacks and drinks. My go-tos consist of cheese slices, grapes, nutty-bars and cheez-its. Caffeine is also a must and I don’t like coffee, so a 32oz Dr. Pepper usually suffices. Snacks are essential for minimal stops and best travel time.

3. A Full Tank

I always fill up the night before, so I can get on the road as soon as possible. I get so antsy to get home I don’t want to waste 15 minutes pumping gas after class.

4. Car Packed

Similar to having a full tank, I always have my car loaded down the night before, so I can optimize my travel time!

5. Tell Your Parents

I always make sure to let my parents know that I’ve started the long journey home and where I stop for gas. They miss me as much as I miss them (and my pupper) so they want to know that I am safe when driving such a long distance.

Overall, rock out to some good tunes, plan ahead, and safe travels. Have a great Thanksgiving and winter break y’all!
