Stepping Out of My Comfort Zone Helped Me Find My Home

May 12, 2018

I spent most of my life growing up in Spokane Washington a city close to the Idaho border. My entire life I had aspirations of getting a degree in animal science. During my time in high school only college representatives came from universities around the pacific northwest. It seemed I only had two options that would still keep me relatively close to home. Washington State University and the University of Idaho. As I graduated high school I moved into where I thought I would spend the next four years of my college career in Moscow Idaho.

While most of my classmates were feeling at home walking campus, I only seemed to think there was a program and school out there that felt more at home. While talking to my animal science professor Dr. Doumit, he helped me better envision my perfect school which was Kansas State University.

I didn’t feel comfortable at all with the idea of moving far away from home at first. It took me a long time to fully wrap my head around the concept of packing up my car, leaving all my new friends and family to head to a state where I knew no one. After receiving my acceptance letter and a transfer scholarship I knew the only way I could truly find out if this was in fact the next chapter of my college career was hopping on a plane for a transfer orientation weekend. From the moment I stepped onto campus, it felt different, even as a stranger it felt more at home than the concrete sidewalks I had been roaming the past 8 months on my campus.  It didn’t take long for me to decide to enroll in classes.

Moving into Manhattan officially fall 2016 was one of the best decisions I have made. As I began exploring my new school and attending classes it seemed like I had more motivation to attend classes, an excellent relationship with my new advisor, and an enthusiastic attitude toward my new family.

One of the biggest opportunities and blessings I have found is Sigma Alpha. This organization has given me an opportunity to meet some of the best woman representing the college of agriculture here at Kansas state. Given me an opportunity to grow as a leader, become a professional woman, and a more successful student. Sigma Alpha has become my home away from home. If I hadn’t stepped out of my comfort zone to pack up and move 1,000 miles away I would never have experienced the k state family and found my home at Sigma Alpha.
