How to Know If You’re in the Right Major

October 30, 2018

Have you ever considered changing your major? Are you ever just blown away by how focused, dedicated, and confident friends and classmates seem? Do you wonder if you’re on the right path? Well chances are you have wondered these things—and you’re not alone! The College Solution claims that more than 1/3 of all college students will change their major at least once and many will change their major twice. How does one make the leap from one major to the next?

Recently, I was faced with some decisions regarding my major—I was dual majoring in agronomy and agribusiness, but it didn’t feel right. Here are just a few things I considered in my decision-making process:

Do you enjoy your classes? Chances are, your classes are designed to give you a feel for the career your major is geared towards. If you dread going to most of your major focused classes, maybe it’s time to reconsider.

Take your time! Don’t rush into any decisions. You have time to decide. To help ensure you’re making the right decision, think on it. Don’t rush into any decisions.

Seek advice: Talk to your current advisor. Their whole job is to help you! Talk to teachers in the area you’re looking at switching to. Talk to people already in the industry. Make connections with people who can help you. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! Also, conversations with friends can help you get where you need to be.

Find something you’re passionate about: What do you enjoy? What’s something that you look forward to doing, and could you do it every day for the rest of your life? Look for some way to pursue that! As the timeless adage says: if you are doing something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life!

No matter what decision you make, take your time in deciding—don’t rush and make sure you feel confident in your decision. Everything will work out in the end!
