Dealing with Distractions

While living in a world where social media, games and television shows are continuously attached to our hands, it is extremely easy to become distracted, and occasionally extremely difficult to get things done. Distractions not only can increase the time needed to complete a task, but it can decrease performance as well. Learning how to deal with distractions is a crucial step in college life, and here I will share a few techniques I have learned throughout the years on how to say no to distractions and say yes to productivity.
 

1. Put your phone away

This doesn’t just mean set your phone on the table next to you while you’re working, but to place it in a completely different room altogether. In my personal experience, if I know my phone is right next to me I will stop every few minutes to look at it. By it being in another room it decreases the motivation to get up and get it, therefore leading to more focus on the task at hand.

 

2. Set specific goals

Setting specific goals allows you to know when you can reward yourself for the work you have completed. For example, I make a list of things I need to get done, and when I check one thing off the list, I reward myself by taking a break and doing something else. Setting goals keeps your mind on track and helps you accomplish more.

 

3. Work comfortably, but not too comfortably

Never do homework in your bed. All this does is make your body think it is time to go sleep. Work somewhere that is comfortable, but also somewhere that won’t make it easy for you to just lie down and take a nap.

 

All of these methods have made it easier for me to focus on certain tasks and not get distracted by other activities. I used to do homework sitting in my bed, but I would easily become tired and set my work aside. Setting goals allows you to become less overwhelmed by what needs to be completed, and more motivated to finish tasks and move on to others. Everyone becomes distracted by different things but learning how to handle distractions is necessary for improving performance and staying on top of your work, whatever that may be.
